Tuna Tuesday
Yesterday Jenny from the Working Waters Trust came to speak to us about Tuna (long-finned eel).
We learnt that tuna are ka rawe - awesome because...
- they live up to 100 years old!
- they are only found here in Aotearoa
- they used to grow really long and really wide
- they used to weigh up to 40kg!
- they were here before the dinosaurs!
- they survived the ice ages
- Māori thought of them as taniwha and kaitiaki (guardians)
- they are also super healthy kai!
Tuna are a taonga - treasure, and they need our help! The numbers of tuna are declining.
Next Friday we are going to be scientists to see how we can help our tuna. We will visit Nottingham Stream to see how healthy the stream is for tuna to live in. Hopefully we will get to see some tuna!
Here is a map showing Halswell School and Nottingham Stream.
Can you see how our school buildings are shaped like a tuna?
We learnt a cool song and dance about tuna. Click here to have a listen!
